The Immersive Learning Initiative started as a reaction to Rett's post on reddit about his brother Jeb with Down Syndrome, who loves VR, but is having difficulty learning the alphabet.
The reaction to this call to action formed The Immersive Learning Initiative, a group of volunteers made up of programmers, UX experts, researchers, 3D artists, teachers, pathologists, audio engineers and other experts. Our goal is to create a free and open source VR game for the Oculus Quest that will help people learn the alphabet and basic literacy skills.
UX & Research Team Lead
Hi I'm Jorge J González, I'm an HCI researcher for University of Castilla-La Mancha and the UX and research lead on the Immersive Learning Initiative.
Making software that can solve needs and that can help others is what made me love software engineering and computer science, and even more if I can step into my or others creations as we can do in VR!
My role here is ensuring that our game is usable for people with Down syndrome as well ensuring that they are actually learning and eager to keep doing it.
By achieving this we can help Jeb and other kids with his condition to learn to read and that's a very powerful motivation to work hard on this project.
Community Outreach Team Lead
Hi I'm Oliver James and I'm the Community Outreach Team Lead here at The Immersive Learning Initiative, we're the makers of Jeb's Game.
We get to use the latest in VR technology to be able to help children and adults that are having dificulty learning how to read, the alphabet and basic reading skills, in an environment that they love and feel comfortable with.
I really can't think of anything more powerful than that. Language is the basis of all learning. I'm honored to be here and that's why I volunteered for this project.
